- Historically used by daimyō and Japan's military, including the Imperial Japanese Army and Imperial Japanese Navy.
- Known as the Jyūrokujō-Kyokujitsu-ki in Japanese.
- Adopted as the war flag on May 15, 1870, and used until the end of World War II in 1945.
